Some criteria that can help you to choose the project manager of an ISO 9001 project are:
- is involved in the core processes of the organization and has a good understanding of them
- should have the time and availability to carry out the activities
- has experience running projects, which include organizing people, defining and assigning tasks and resources, and other issues relevant to the project.

Note: The type and size of the business significantly influence this decision.

Note: These criteria are applicable for those organizations that do not have a Quality Department that can manage the project entirely.

Note: in smaller organizations without a PMO (Project Management Office), it is a good practice for the project manager to be a part of the middle management (e.g., department managers) with enough authority to run the project.

Examples:
In a manufacturing company, the production manager is appointed as the project manager for the QMS implementation project. Because of availability constraints, some of her tasks are assigned to other employees so that she can dedicate her time to the ISO 9001 project.
